[PFS NL] Re: Practical advice on staring a new PFS group (Groningen)

Yay! Glad to hear we got you hooked! It was good to meet you and it was fun playing with you.

The background: If there are RPGs being played, then there are potential pathfinder players. That is a good thing. You might not be able to convince those players themselves, but people always know people, and they might have friends interested in joining.

The plan: asking the store owner is always good. I hope you can work out a scedule. The silverhex is also a good starting point. Easy to set up (one map per quest) and a roleplay and combat part shows the system to new players, with the chance of trying out multiple chacaters.
However, picking a break point, I would not stop in the middle of a quest. It would make it awkward is some people cant make it next week, or if they want to play another game (for example the upcoming special). They will have half a chronicle so to speak. There are six quests. If you play two or three an evening, let them know there are several more they can try out. If they like it, they will come back anyway.
First steps is 'nice' because its free, but it really isnt up to date anymore with current events. That said, it does showcase a lot of different things characters can do (puzzles, combat, talking), so its a good learning scenario. Wounded Whisp and Confirmation are both good. Master of the Fallen Fortress is also a nice one. Only downside is that it only gives one prestige.

The practical questions: a lot of people prefer a book to leaf trough. If the store has pathfinder books, ask if you can put several of those on display. Bonus for you, bonus for the store. (you dont have to buy them and the store might sell them).
Paizo has the community use packagas http://paizo.com/paizo/about/communityuse/package there is lots of free stuff in there that you can download and use. Of course there are the pregens, but there is also artwork you can use to maybe make a poster yourself, or flyers.
The field guide is nice as flavor, but let people know they dont need it to play. Having the guide to organised play with you is also handy to explain people how they can make their own character. They are free to use pregens of course. They work really well for the first level, but its nicer to eventually have your own character.

I would not restrict to core unless you have a full group of players that explicitly want to. You can explain its a choice, but like you said, people like having more options. If you have a lot of new players, they will most likely stick to Core anyway, with maybe a few extra options. Its OK not to know everything as a GM. As your players get more experience, so will you. Thats the nice thing of a fresh group. You can grow together :)

If time is an issue, ask the store first. Maybe they are OK with staying open longer. If not, maybe you can make a deal, for example, they stay open longer if you help out with cleaning/closing after the game. If it really is an issue, we can advice on scenarios that take a short time to run. By the time there are no longer any of those to run, we can take another look at the situation. Like finding another place to play.
